Children Close the Door in Silence

A powerful and deeply moving picture book about children living in the shadow of war. Through poetic, almost allegorical storytelling and beautiful yet at times almost haunting illustrations, the book speaks about children who become invisible — overlooked by adults, silenced by conflicts, and forced to carry burdens no child should bear.

Rather than depicting one specific war, the book addresses the universal experience of children trapped inside violence, displacement and indifference. Its restrained text and emotionally charged imagery create a rare kind of picture book: one that speaks equally strongly to children, teenagers and adults.

Written as an immediate artistic response to the crises of our time, the book becomes not only a reflection on war, but also a quiet and urgent call for peace. Peter Svetina, a multiple nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, brings exceptional literary depth to the project, while the illustrations balance tenderness with devastating emotional force.

A visually striking and internationally relevant title for publishers looking for meaningful, enduring books that open conversations about empathy, humanity and responsibility.
