After her mother’s death, the unnamed protagonist returns with her young son to the apartment where she spent a big part of her childhood and youth. For one night, she wants to return to the past and view it through the eyes of her deceased relatives. The actual setting of the novel is one day, but since the mechanisms of memory recovery are unpredictable, the unsuspected, eventful and tragic fate of three generations of her family from the First World War to approximately the 1980s begins to unfold in her apartment (as viewed by the reader). The family’s greatest traumatic event was the unjust persecution of the protagonist’s grandfather. While describing historical events, the author ponders over the nature of memory and truth. What of everything the protagonist remembers is true and what is just a figment of her imagination? Is the past with its facts accessible to memory? How are we conditioned by a time that was not lived by us, but by our ancestors?
