The Man Beneath the Street

Senior Inspector Maks Veber returns to the police force after several months of treatment for alcohol addiction. The police receive a report that construction workers have discovered a body while carrying out work on a nearby street. All the evidence points to a victim of a wartime or post-war execution, but just before construction is due to resume, the workers uncover another body, this time freshly dismembered and decapitated. The story takes a surprising turn, while Maks’s personal life adds further intrigue: his ongoing struggle with alcohol, his romantic entanglement and a brief affair with a trainee detective.
